Jamison Bourque

Once, our design team created LED “lightbar” animations for Alexa and Google Assistant on a new product, then we handed them over to the dev team as rendered video examples. The firmware team struggled to recreate the videos in code and diodes, and the product development was basically blocked.

I designed a web app that ran on the product’s early prototypes and had a UI that included sliders and buttons to control the LEDs in the diffused lightbar.

That way, our designers could create the animations right on the hardware, watching each change until it was exactly what they wanted. Our firmware team even enabled the app to export code they could drop directly into the product image, and the design handoff became the firmware deliverable, which saved the company time and money.

Most of my work goes like that. I love solving problems with design. I'm self-taught, mentor-trained, and a 3rd generation designer — a craftsman and creator who uses every tool possible to create, repair, and enhance human experiences.
